Vol. 2 – 27 Sep 2025

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of everyday life, from smartphones to streaming recommendations to video games. AI isn’t “the future” anymore. It’s here, changing our lives in real time. I feel it’s important for our young people to understand and leverage AI tools now so they can be experts by the time they enter the work force (or become entrepreneurs, as we homeschoolers often do.) Geek Cred students in the AI for Creative Projects class are learning how to use AI not only as a convenient tool but also as a way to expand their own creativity. The course is designed to teach practical skills, encourage critical thinking, and provide hands-on experience with text, image, video, and music platforms.

During the first few weeks of the semester, students focused on foundational skills using ChatGPT. They discussed what AI is and the ethical questions that surround its use, including bias, plagiarism, and ownership of creative works. They then practiced writing effective prompts, moving from vague requests to detailed instructions, and experimented with ChatGPT as an idea generator for stories and essays. There has been a bit of a learning curve on my end too! As the students became more and more engaged, (some of them type super fast!!) they started hitting limits on their free student accounts, so we have shifted to an incredibly powerful platform called MagicSchool. Since then, they have created an interactive story, using AI as the Game Master, and have begun customizing their own ChatBot tools!

As the course continues, they will branch into visual and audio tools, experimenting with AI-generated images, animations, videos, and music. Each phase is designed to give them a sense of how different AI tools can be combined to support larger creative projects. The semester will conclude with independent final projects in which students apply the tools and skills they have learned. These projects will highlight their ability to combine creativity with technology in responsible and imaginative ways. Families can look forward to seeing a wide variety of unique projects that showcase student initiative, problem-solving, and innovation.
In the end, your student should know that they are a creator and that AI is a fabulous partner.

P.S. This article was outlined by the same ChatGPT chat I used to outline the course. It knows the syllabus, has had conversations with us in-class, and even helps me write the recaps each week. I figured there would be none more qualified to help me create an article on the subject!
