Eye on the Sky Vol. 4 – Saturday September 16, 2023

This is a pretty exciting week for sky watchers here on Earth! There are several interesting things to check out!

1. If you happen to have access to a telescope, you’ll have the best chance of clearly seeing Neptune, the farthest planet in our solar system (unless you ask us Gen Xers and Boomers that insist on holding onto Pluto. 😆) It is at its apogee and will be shining its brightest all night on the 19th.

2. Mercury will also be begging for attention just before sunrise on the 22nd.

3. The 23rd is Autumnal Equinox, so we’ll have the same amount of night as day. It marks the start of Astronomers’ favorite time of year!

4. OSIRIS-REx is expected to return with asteroid samples on the 24th, so look for news on that.

5. Finally, a different sort of display is happening in the sky this coming weekend – The Miramar Air Show! This is a favorite of our family. You’ll catch us checking out the vintage biplanes on the tarmac and listening to “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins. 😎

Geek Out,
Miss. Andrea
