Eye on the Sky Vol. 6 – Saturday, September 30, 2023

We’ve mentioned the San Diego Astronomy Association (SDAA) before in this series, but did you know that they hold Star Parties every month?! They have a special Dark Sky Observing Site called Tierra del Sol, in Boulevard, that has a 22-inch Lipp Ritchey-Chretien reflector, as well as an 8-inch D&G refractor in the observatory. If you don’t know, those are a couple pretty powerful scopes! Many members also bring their own scopes and set up around the property during these parties. It is an incredible opportunity to see many deep sky objects all in one night, for FREE! Members are so knowledgeable and truly enjoy sharing their excitement. The October Star Party will be next Saturday, the 7th. SDAA has several helpful documents on their website to help you prepare, but here are the important highlights:

*Be there before sunset so your headlights and dome lights don’t wreck anyone’s dark-adapted vision or photo exposures.

*Bring bug spray and a jacket.

*No flashlights or phone lights! Use the red color filter on your phone. Dim red lights are fine, in fact, we’ll have some available for HEC students!🚨

*Make sure your dome lights and headlights are off if you are leaving early.

The photo of the moon you see above was taken with Mrs. Cova’s phone on a 16-inch Meade Reflector in 2019! We’re borrowing a Dobsonian telescope from SDAA, so we’ll hopefully be able to set it up at the party. Either way, we’ll be playing our Favorites playlist on Spotify, using the red filter, and enjoying the Milky Way while we look for cool deep sky objects!🌌
